And Cowgirl Creamery sold to a Swiss dairy on the same day. Interesting day for a couple of artisanal producers.

Good catch. Teaching moment: Brian's subject line, "Another one bites the dust," might have done well to add something more specific. For some reason, unless a cryptic subject line is truly compelling, people are less likely to open the post.

Can I disagree? Okay, so someone already posted it. But your "teaching moment" aside, some of us travel and aren't able to see/read every post so whether the topic is obvious or hiding in plain sight like Brian's , a double-up is hardly worth shaking a finger over--on either side of the story.

I posted two this week! 8) But honestly, we just don't drink as much wine as we used to do, and when we do, it's usually QPRish, and if it's ho-hum, I don't post it. The good ones generally find their way to the forum, but it's not every day.

I hope it was clear that this phrase was not aimed at you but at everyone (including me, myself and I). We all tend to do this, at least many of us do, so I was preaching to the choir, not scolding you. If that was NOT clear, then I truly and humbly apologize. :(

This question isn't directly related to Copain, but what's the deal with all these big buyouts? I was always under the impression that the vast majority of quality-seeking wineries didn't make significant profits. Certainly that seems to be the case with the wineries I'm familiar with where they are liquidated when the proprietor dies or retires. Presumably if the winery was profitable you'd see professional management stepping in to take over the business. But these buyouts, of Prisioner, Copain, Siduri, etc. are all $$$ deals. Were they really profitable enough to justify an investment of that magnitude?

The other thing that's interesting is that it almost seems to be a disadvantage to posess large amounts of vineyard. If I'm not mistaken, all of these labels were largely made from purchased grapes.

The articles actually elude to answers: acquisition allows one to access known brands. Preempt loss of customers to new trends (IPOB was actually mentioned in the Chronicle article). These small wineries also have active wine clubs and tasting room sales, which the big guys want to acquire access to. Plus, in some areas, there is serious push back (Napa Valley!) against new wineries and vineyards.

I live in Solano County, and multinationals have been acquiring vineyards over the last few years. Not a big loss in the sense that the two latest acquisitions (Ledgwood Creek and Winterhawk were, bluntly, mediocre to awful wines). But still kind of sad in the context of building a local wine tourism trade and winery business model. For access to Suisun Valley grapes but also for water rights. I have heard that there is limited water in Napa-and a risk of salinity in groundwater. Not really a problem in Suisun Valley yet.

Good work! Drop the "The," though. And consider "devours". Stronger word, and saves a letter.

No need to apologize, I actually thought your remark more pointed at Brian than me. But still, I find it rather unproductive to try to Beautify America by making every post look like what we'd prefer rather than just embrace that people are posting. That's all I was saying. Carry on!

Newp. Totally aimed at the choir. :)

At the risk of digging myself in deeper ... I'm not at all concerned about "beautification." I am, however, interested in communication. An obscure title - unless it's as witty as a Bueker or Coad jewel - may not attract people to open the post. At least, that's what my thinking was. Not abut tidiness - this is a famously untidy place, and I'm fine with that - but encouraging (not demanding) that we consider framing posts to make it easy on a quick scan to see what the conversations are about.

I open every Bueker post just to stand in awe of his clever turn of phrase. In fact, it's sometimes so clever it makes me scratch my head trying to figure it out. But..then...I'm not a rocket scientise!!
