Poll - if you had to pick one, and only one grape

by David M. Bueker » Tue Jan 05, 2016 9:43 am

For your wine, forever and ever, which grape would it be?

Why?

(FYI - the poll only allows 21 options, so I had to leave things out)

As much as I love Riesling, I picked Pinot Noir, because I can get great red wine, fine rosé and amazing Champagne from that one grape.

Another vote for Pinot Noir for much the same reasons as David gave. That doesn't mean I prefer Burgundy to Bordeaux but Cabernet Sauvignon can't do it on its own.

Same here, however, there are a few people also producing nice white wine from PN, including one locally - Pinot Magic From Long Cliff Winery.
Chico - Hey! This Bottle is empty!
Groucho - That's because it's dry Champagne.

Plus, if you planted it, pretty soon you'd have any number of clonal mutations to give you a little more, uh, variety.

Yeah, PN for me as well.

Interestingly though, my second choice, if allowed two, would be Nebbiolo.

I still love a good Cabernet-preferably in some kind of carefully considered blend. I love the anise, the earth, the tannins. My preference in cabernet, however, tends to the lighter, even green side. Clos Du Val instead of Shafer. Coombsville (and even Carneros) over Calistoga.

That was my reasoning- I'll stretch it and say let's don't forget the "Pinot Gouges" sport, can drink some white NSG.
Plus in red there is a lot of style variety.

And as mentioned elsewhere on the site, a little Musigny Blanc.

I've got to add to the Pinot chorus, for all the reasons already so elegantly stated.

And, if we could have two, my second pick would be Sangiovese, perhaps mostly for sentimental reasons: I came to good wine through the Tuscan basics, and still love them, not only for their happy happy joy joy but because they, too, cover a fairly broad (although not Pinot-broad) range of pairing flavors.

I voted for Pinot Noir, too. Choosing Pinot is a lot like dating a schizophrenic*: you get so much variety with just one choice

* Yes, it's really multiple personality disorder, but that doesn't run off the tongue the same way, nor does it obliquely reference Ian Hunter's "You're Never Alone With a Schizophrenic"

I thought Musigny blanc was Chardonnay?

Besides the Gouges sport, I was blinded with a white PN from Alsace one summer in Nice (I failed miserably)

The sparkling wine thing skews the results of the pole, with sparklers included Pinot has a huge advantage.

Would be interesting to see if the results would be markedly more varied if only still wines were considered.

Speaking for myself, I didn't give sparkling a single thought when I voted. Just the red stuff.

I may have taken the same approach Jenise except that I saw the 2nd post in this thread by David, who initiated the poll, mentioning the versatility of the Pinot grape. Once that's in the mix I would choose Pinot also, although that would not be the case if we're only talking about the predominant wine a grape is used to produce.
