Speck's Top 100 or Bojo Nouveau: Which matters least?

by Robin Garr » Wed Nov 18, 2015 1:17 pm

Whoa! I just got email from a firm that thinks Beaujolais Nouveau is still a thing! Who knew?

Which raises the idea of a two-question poll. It's attached ...

Shops still sell a lot of BN.

True! And most of it's up to $10-plus these days. Was Barnum right?

Not in this case. Most people are not so critical about their wine as we are. The pricing reflects the fact that most everything has risen in price over the years.

A difficult question. Both are profoundly unimportant to me. I finally gave my vote to WS because I usually buy one bottle of BN to start satisfying my curiosity about the new vintage.

Bojo sells a great deal less than it did 15, 20, years ago. At least in our marketing area. Spec influence is still very strong. Let's face it I would rather choose to drink a bottle of wine among the Spec's choices than any bottle of Bojo.

Lists are interesting. Beaujolais Nouveau, not so much.

Since Speculator seems to prefer wines that top $150, I voted for WS.

I don't mind the Duboeuf BN all that much, and with Lapierre and other Vin Soif from Gamay heavy blends.... 8)

Sinc e Hoke told me Lou was the model for those World's Most Interesting Man commercials, I had to agree with Lou.

Well I didn't know you would be so negative about Beaujolais. I mean I guess I can understand how your customer base would not be attracted by the pleasures of Beaujolais. But you too? I thought you had a good palate! :)

Bojo Nouveau is completely pointless. The WS Top 100 at says something about the pulse of the wine world.

I have to agree with Hoke, it’s a tie (if Robin is referring to all the “hoopla” and the so-called “Beaujolais Nouveau phenomena” and not “Early Wine” in general.).

Bojo Nouveau in the wine trade is referred to as strawberry pop. Where they place or how many points they obtain is not important to me but there are some damn good wines among the Speculators 100. If you think that the 100 does not contain anything better than Strawberry POP that's your palate not mine.

Strawberry pop may be a good descriptor for the BN that makes it to the USA but in better years a few are much better than that from producers of the calibre of J-P Brun and Chermette. Some 2015s promise to be very good.

I'd say WS matters, only because occasionally a wine I like makes top 10, and that spoils pricing for that wine for a while./
