Help me name a Sparkling Wine

Sales of Prosecco sparkling wine throughout the World have risen by an astounding amount in the last year. The success of Italy’s prospering export has been causing a stir between publicans and Prosecco DOC Consortium with them placing this Prosecco sparkling wine and serving it on tap.

They wish to protect the name whilst selling it only in a bottle. Prosecco is registered as a “Protected Designation of Origin (PDO), a status it was granted in 2009. This means the name “Prosecco” cannot be used as a Brand on our sparkling wine on tap, even though the wine we would be supplying on tap is exactly the same as the Prosecco in a bottle.

The practise of serving “genuine” Prosecco on tap arguably does not mislead the consumer in respect of the origin of the product, nor does it involve serving an imitation wine that exploits the reputation of the protected Prosecco name. The vineyard was founded 1891 and is in its 5th family generation.

So I'm looking for a name or Brand for our sparkling “Prosecco” wine(which we are unable to use) that may come from Italian origin. Frizzenti is a Brand already in use.

I just wanted to make clear that I invited you to post your call for names for your wine. I hope the creative minds here can come up with something good.

First thought that crosses my mind is probably pretty weak, but what about something like "Fizzzz" - Fizz, but with extra Zees to make it one-of-a-kind and perhaps trademarkable?

Probably best to avoid any play on words that might evoke Prosecco. Will have to give this some thought. Do you want a serious name, or is something playful OK?

When I think of Prosecco, I think of something I want to enjoy, not analyze.. Why not call it something along the lines of Enjoy, but in Italian, like Gustare

Italian Sparkling Glera

You can have a nod & wink on your wine list that Glera is the grape used to make Prosecco

, even though the wine we would be supplying on tap is exactly the same as the Prosecco in a bottle.

I understand that the bubbles in bottled Prosecco are formed by secondary fermentation in a pressurised tank (Charmat method)

How do the bubbles get in the wine when supplied on tap?

Interesting subject. As a side note, I have seen a red from the Douro and all the label says is "Sexy". TomH will like that!!

in Germany a wine comparable to "prosecco frizzante" used to be called "Perlwein" which might translate to "bubbling wine". Nowadays, Perlwein is frequently sold under the name "Secco" and that should work in your case as well, I think.

That might run him into some world trademark issues, since Bolla was the huge operation that made Valpolicella and Bardolino famous. I'm not sure it enhanced their reputation, as the industrial-style line earned a reputation for being plonkish that made artisanal Valpolicella kind of a hard sell for years, but I would surely avoid going there for this bubbly ...

Norman, where is target audience? Primarily in Italian, English, or something else or a mix? Italian wordplay will not sell in UK or Ireland.

Before one could get better Prosecco in US my main use was for Bellini cocktails- maybe a play on that? Belliinissimo

I imagine that the reason they don't allow draught sales is because the consumer would have no way of being sure what they were drinking. I think all higher appellations do this for the same reason.

There's plenty of pink Prosecco around, Peter. Whether it's permitted under the IGT/IGP rules, I cannot say, and knowing Italy, it may not matter much. But I'm pretty sure that Prosecco Raboso is a designated varietal style; and if you go looking on Wine-Searcher.com for "prosecco rosé," you'll find a bunch of it.

Unless this has changed, when I researched and wrote up a Raboso a while back, "Prosecco bottlings from Conegliano and Valdobbiadene must be white, made from at least 85 percent Prosecco grapes, with the balance filled out from a short list of other local or international white varieties" ... but the Prosecco DOC is a whole lot larger than just those two sub-regions, and there the producers may - and many joyously do - add some Raboso or even other red grapes. Raboso supposedly makes a wine too tart for full-varietal use, but in the case of otherwise bland high-yield Prosecco, that benefits the blend.

That's the way I understood it, anyway, a few years ago, after consulting with some Prosecco gurus in the DOC.
