Wine-related Christmas loot?

by Bruce Hayes » Mon Dec 25, 2006 9:47 am

So, what did everyone get?

I got a bottle of d'Arenberg The Money Spider Rousanne from my brother, and a bunch of LCBO gift certificates from other people.

How about you?

It is classy -- I don't know when I'll have a practical use for it, but I loved it when I saw first saw it in Costco.

Our friends are having their house extended and theve been without their kitchen for a couple of months so they join us for dinner every Sunday. Its a chance to open some good wines -- anyway, that was their thank you gift. We had our Cjhristmas dinner with them yesterday.

Roast beef, roast potatoes, roast parsnips, steamed carrots, brussel sprouts and green beans and yorkshire pudding, followed by home made apple pie and ice cream.

Wines

1990 Castellane Champagne Brut (Champagne, France)
2003 Jim Barry Shiraz McRae Wood (Clare Valley, Australia)
2000 Château des Charmes Vidal Icewine (Niagara Peninsula, Canada)

No wine related stuff this year (yet - there's still a chance).

Happy with the other stuff though - will be making fresh pasta in the new year, using recipes from the 'Silver Spoon'. Nice!

Anyway we need to drink what we have!

We gave but did not receive. #1 Brother got three from Terre Rouge/Easton. Other Bro & Sis got different three packs from Tobin James. All very thankful.

Merry Christmas

Bucko, I also got the new Oxford. Anybody want my old one? Just ask, I'll send it.

Hi Bruce,

My list was heavily weighted toward wine loot and I was blessed by:

1. 2004 Cotes du Beaune Villages
2. 2005 Spy Valley Pinot from NZ
3. 2003 Coudoulet du Beaucastel Cotes du Rhone
3. "Red, White, and Drunk All Over" by Natalie MacLean
4. New wine glasses by Mikasa: we tend to break a lot glasses and so I saw these new Kwarz glasses by Mikasa that are supposedly highly break resistant. I received
4 universal tasting glasses (Sauvignon Blanc and other whites)
4 tannic wine glasses (Bordeaux etc.)
4 smooth wine glasses (Burgundy etc.)

Not a bad haul :) .

I received something called a "CorkPops".... "The Fastest, Easiest Way to Open a Bottle of Wine..." http://www.corkpops.com Hmmm.

And a bottle of Smith-Madrone Estate Bottled 2001 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon.

Be careful -- thats the device that pumps air into thebottle increasing internal pressure until the cork is forced out -- unless there is a weakness in the glass in which case it shatters.

Works better with burgundy shaped bottle (no corners in bottle shape to trap air) and a polished cork.

Had such a device 20+ years ago and it always worried me, soon stopped using it.

Thanks for that advice, Peter. I haven't used it yet, and was feeling a bit hesitant/skeptical about it all. It just seems so odd. :?

2000 Chateau de Pez
2004 JJ Prum Auslese
2002 Rubicon
1996 Palmes d'Or Champagne
2003 Drouhin Chorey Les Beaune

Excellent, but once again no one picked up the 2001 Yquem that was on my list. I don't think they are getting the message. Next year I plan to underline it. :)

I got more of the Schott Zweisel Tritan (breakresistant, titanium) stems, the white Burg/Chard and the Riesling/Rose. I love them for everyday use.

That Glenrothes is lovely stuff. I received my Riedel scotch glasses to drink it. I also received a bottle of barollo (I don't have it with me right now) and a really cool wine tie.

No comparison to the wines already listed here, but my wife bought for me six bottles of wine from a favorite winery of ours in the Central Coast Region of California; Castoro Cellars.

1. 1993 Cotes de Bourg Chateau something or other which I opened for lunch on the 26th. Muddy, rust-colored, nasty stuff that went down the drain.

2. Sutter Home Zinfandel 2001 - For Pizza lunch later.

3. Taittinger Brut Reserve NV - This is for tomorrow's Sparkler's and New Wines dinner with the rest of the Winos.

4. Macallan 18 year old - Jackpot!

5. Best of all, my wife put together a wine tasting kit. She didn't buy a ready made kit as there aren't any available here in Manila so she made this herself! Bags to hide the wine, scoring sheets, pens, calculator, wine glass charms, the works. Just add wines and glasses
