Never had it. Really want to try it?

For me it is Krug Clos d'Ambonnay. At $3K a bottle I likely never will.

David, any of the elegant German wines you talk about here on WLDG.

I've had Petrus twice. Both times it was served blind, and both times it stood out as something completely unique. Amazing wine.

I had a Rudi Kaniawan Petrus--not quite the same thing.

So yeah, Petrus for me too.

Nadi and Charlie´s Coteaux du Saumur and DRC´s Bâtard.

BTW, I have three Clos d´Ambonnay in my cellar, but they are not mine. I just keep them for a friend that likes to buy really expensive stuff but does not have a proper cellar... :roll:

Great question! It's a tough one for me, because I've been undeservedly lucky as a wine writer, albeit not a famous one, I've been privileged to taste almost all of the "target" wines, mostly in tastings and winery visits (and amazing CIS > WLDG events) where I didn't even have to pay. :lol: Petrus? D'Yquem? First growths? Grange? Vega Sicilia? Opus? Top Germans, Austrians, Italians? Been there, done that. I haven't had the opportunity (or the desire) to go for Screaming Eagle and such, but they're not really on my list.

So I think I'll fashion my wish list on dreams that can never be, instead.

* The wedding wine at Cana

* Falernum at Caesar's court

* Trockenbeerenauslese with Charlemagne

* Bubbly with Dom in his cellars

* Pre-phylloxera first growths

* Ancient Chianti with Barone Ricasoli ... oh, wait, I really did get to do that. :oops:

I had similar experiences, both times during horizontal tastings; 1988 and 1994, IIRC. Neither were stellar vintages at Bordeaux but both times Pétrus stood out.

There are hundreds of wines which I long to taste but I will be boringly conventional and opt for la Romanée-Conti.

As in DRC RC?

I've had a number of DRC wines, and they are delicious, but not singular in the way that Petrus is IMNSHO.

If you mean a wine I haven't tried because I can't afford it, then DRC or Petrus. But going for an utterly unaffordable wine seems to me to be an easy answer.

So I'd go for Chave, because I could probably splurge.

It's well worth splurging on Chave.

I don't mean any DRC wine. I mean La Romanée-Conti itself. I've had LaTâche '62, utterly wonderful in the late 80s, and '90, not yet ready at 10 years of age.

Also Grands Echézeaux in a Paris restaurant in the 60s but my memory of it is blurred. In the 60s when I was hardly more than a student I could afford DRC's GE in a restaurant :shock: .

DRC comes to mind first because Burgundy is the top of my splurge budget, but obviously never gets up to DRC level. Although quite frankly there are plenty of other red Burgundies that are beyond my price level and which I don't see coming around very often in social gatherings!

I have had one taste of DRC, it was about 30 years old, but I forget the exact vintage and bottling, so it can't have been that memorable!

DRC La Ramonee Conti or La Tache or Richebourg would probably top my list. For awhile it was Musigny but I did get a taste of a Musigny at a MO'COOL party. I have had tastes of several D'Yquem and Montrachet vintages and they are among my more memorable wine tastings.

Musigny is a good one. You can get Musigny for expensive but not ruinous prices by trying de Vogue Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru which is young vine (under 25 years) Musigny.

Good one, Howie! I've never had it myself either. If you ever want to share a bottle, the Thruway is a short ride away! :wink:

I've a simple request: to try a birth year wine one of these days (61).

Leaving aside legends like 45 Mouton, 47 Cheval Blanc and Noval Nacional 31, I'd say an Egon Muller TBA.

There is a fairly long lists of wines that I have never tasted but would like to. To me it's really about value. Foolish or not, there is no way I could justify to myself spending the money necessary to buy and taste DRC or many of the Bordeaux First Growths or indeed any of the "legendary" wines. To me $200 or so for a single bottle of wine is an extreme beyond special occasion splurge. Bottles priced beyond that will remain untasted by me unless someone else wants to gift me with a taste. I do own one very expensive bottle,,, a 1948 Taylor Flagdgate Port. But that one... from my birth year was a retirement present from my firm. And I am unclear if I can ever justify opening it.

I'll cheat and list two:

Although I've had many vintages of Chave Hermitage, I'd love to try their Cuvée Catalin.

Ditto for Beaucastel's Hommage à Jacques Perrin.

It's Mary's birth year, too, Glenn! Over the years I have bought her two 1948 Ports - one to open on the eve of the Millennium (well, Dec. 31, 1999, but let's not be pedantic), and another a couple of years later just for us, since we opened the one to honor the Rollover of the Cosmic Clock with a bunch of friends, and she only got one glass. :lol:

My point, though, is this: In my opion, don't wait to open the wine, Choose a special occasion - but it doesn't have to be too special - and enjoy it with loved ones while recalling the circumstances of the gift.

Leaving that beautiful wine locked up in glass won't do anyone any good. :)
