Rest in peace Rogov. You made the world of wine, and indeed the world a better place by your presence.

Wow, very sorry to hear this.

Although he seems to have had a life well lived.

So sorry to hear this. He was a true gentleman, accomplished, eloquent, funny. His tenacity in defending his points of view was always marked by civility.

Rogov was my guide as I took my first steps into the world of serious wine appreciation. I simply would not be the wine lover I am today without him. It's heartbreaking to know that our long-hoped-for meeting will never happen. And I'm particularly sad to have been so busy this past year that I was not able to spend more time "with" him. This is a sad day not just for us here, but for the world of wine, and for all with a passion for the good things in life.

Goodbye, dear Rogov . . . .

A wonderful man. Straight-talking, but courtly and polite.
I will miss him.

So many of us knew Rogov only in print, but not in person. I had intended to change that: before Daniel's illness was known, my husband and I had started talking about a trip to Israel. Bob has never been to the Middle East and I had never been to Israel, so what better time to go than while we have a friend there whose ability to open the doors to food and wine would make it the trip of a lifetime? Alas, it shall never be, not like that. I am so, so sad. So how overjoyed was I this morning to find a Vaynerchuk-like video of a solo Daniel tasting and talking about wine. This fills in so many gaps--the voice, the accent, the gestures, the little asides. For any of you who shall also never meet him, at least on this earth, this is perhaps the next best thing. Nine minutes of Daniel, in his own words.

Sorry to hear this - I greatly enjoyed some off site discussions we had. We took interest and amusement in some of the same things.

Good to see that he will be remembered.

Very sad news. I always enjoyed his humor, good grace, and most of all his tenacity. And he had pretty damn good taste in wine.
Cheers, Rogov.

I'm so sorry to hear this. I always enjoyed his posts here and he was one who would often comment with a friendly or like-minded response to my carefree ramblings in regards to wide-eyed wonders and the magical things in life. Of which I'll most remember him by on here.

It is a real shock to learn about Rogov's demise so shortly after his announcement of a partial retirement. I have always enjoyed his forthright views even when I did not agree with them. He helped a lot to make this a lively place to learn more about our shared wine passion and he will be sorely missed.

From the obituary, a goodbye note:

“Like all critics who take themselves seriously, I greatly enjoyed sharing my thoughts, and in a certain sense I consider myself as the Umberto Eco of wine and culinary criticism, my writing reflects both and accurate and post-modern, that leaves the intelligent reader to come to his own conclusions. At the end of the day, this was a good life.”

We were privileged to have you share some that good life with us. Thank you.

Dave, that's from the goodbye note Rogov left on his own WLDG forum below. You should read the full text; it's a very classy exit. Not that we would have expected less from him.

The video of the Rogov Tribute Dinner is very moving. Although very little in English, the love and respect for this man is clearly evident. As one person described him, "A great artist". Rogov says a few words too.
Very poignant music. Watch it to the end. I felt like I could reach out and hug him too.

Sad for it to come so quickly, but very graceful exit.
The video made me wish I spoke Hebrew (but there is a winemaker about 14 minute mark who pays tribute in English- checked shirt and glasses if you are skimming).
Will raise a glass tonight.
