Help me name a wine

by Howie Hart » Sun Nov 21, 2010 9:50 am

I am about to disgorge a sparkling wine that I will be serving for Thanksgiving dinner. This will be the first 5 bottles of a 20 bottle batch. The rest will remain in tierage until needed. It is a 2008 100% Pinot Noir from local grapes. My original intent was to make it white, but it picked up a pink color after I ran the grapes through my crusher-destemmer. So, it's not a blanc de noir. Sparkling Rosé sounds like something really cheap. Pink Bubbly doesn't do it either. Perhaps I could call it Sparkling Pinot Noir, but I was hoping for something better that I could put on labels. Any suggestions?
Chico - Hey! This Bottle is empty!
Groucho - That's because it's dry Champagne.

If its very pale it might lose the pink colour, I've read that its common for Champagne to pick up colour which later drops out.

If not

Howie's Blush (coz it should have been white)
I must have red it somewhere
Lily ( from the song Lily the Pink)
Carnation (coz its like a pink)
Pinko Noir (with the 'k' offset or italics)

You could still sub-label it a "Blanc de Noirs". I've seen plenty BdN's that had a pink tinge. Gloria Ferrer and St. Michelle come to mind. I do like Rose' the Riveter

Since this color was given to you versus looking for it. It's God's will :)

So call it Couleur des Anges :)

Sorry I didn't get back here sooner. I posted the question on two of my favorite websites, Wine Lovers page and WinePress and received several suggestions. One of the folks on WinePress thought it was a contest and the winner gets a bottle of the wine. I'll go along with that. Here are the suggestions (from both sites) and I will submit them to an impartial judging panel. Four of my sons will decide, as they taste the wine with appetizers for Thanksgiving Dinner. It’s amazing that none of the suggestions were duplicated on the other site. If any more suggestions are posted, I’ll put them on the list for the judges.

I just finished disgorging 6 bottles - 5 full and one used for topping up, so I have a half-bottle left over and I'm sipping a glass now. It's finished naturel - no dosage. First sip was a bit tart, but the second sip was nice, and it is a very pretty wine.
Chico - Hey! This Bottle is empty!
Groucho - That's because it's dry Champagne.

Translate that into French and it would probably sound better.

JC, reading through the responses I sped-read your reply and saw "pink" and "posy" and I don't want to admit what I thought the second word was instead!

Howie, I love the play of words in Rose the Riveter, but it would be hard to pass up 'Hart of the Rose'. Classy, clever, proprietary.

The winner is "Rosé the Riveter". I'll be sending Jim a bottle of said wine. I edited a version of Norman Rockwell's painting to use on the label.

That would probably get you banned in Alabama and probably some other states as well!
