Wine Focus for June: Looks like rosé!

by David M. Bueker » Thu May 27, 2010 8:21 am

What say we all to rose? It's been really hot, and while I know we have done this one before I think it bears repeating when the warm weather comes around.

EDIT BY RG: The poll results are in, and it's definitive. We'll do rosé for this month. We can consider Italian whites the tentative topic for July, and talk about it further between now and the end of the month.

Works for me ... a rosé by any other name, etc ...

Given the weather in California this week, I think we need to focus on mulled wine or Glog.

At least the high pressure system is returning this weekend!

Don't really like Rose, but I am game. Have we ever did Northeastern Italian whites? I love Friulano!

Have to agree with Brian. Love Chablis and CB from Loire but the most interesting whites come from NE Italy. Pinot Grigio is defined in this area, IMHO.

Well that would be fine but count me completely out. I have never had a northern Italian white that made me want to buy any, and I have had a lot.

I like rosé and I like NE Italy. We do have more rosé available here, however. In fact, we hardly have any NEI wines. But I'm drinking quite little these days, so I probably won't play much this month either, so don't make my vote count very much. ;-)

Like Otto we like both, but would prefer Rose' at this point. It was 97 degree F here yesterday, which broke all records.

We could make everyone reasonably happy and schedule NE Italy for July! We'll need some red wine at some point though.

All of a sudden rosé is everywhere - in print ads, in wine reviews, in my cooler, at offlines - everywhere!

Rosé is fine for me provided summer arrives. We had three warm days last week but the weather has reverted to damp and overcast.

I don't think I have any NE Italian whites in my cellar and the best importers are a 150km+ round trip. Is Marche (Verdicchio) too far south to qualify as NE?

Maybe make some mulled wine from Rosé.
Might be a bit thin looking, though.

Rosé is out of season here too.

But I can contribute notes from 'last summer'. :P

David, have you ever tried a Jermann Vintage Tunina with some bottle age (8-10 years)? I'm a big fan.

I don't do this often, but could you switch months? Do Italian whites in June and Rosés in July? I would broaden the Italian whites a bit. Why not the entire peninsula? A bit broad perhaps, but Italian whites are obscure to the general public outside of the ubiquitous Pinot Grigio. Just my two cents.

I was hoping we might go with rose' in June. I have several recently purchased French and Spanish rose's. We just did whites with the white Burgundies (I have two late notes to post next week on that topic.) I just tried a Friulia Sauvignon Blanc at a restaurant but probably don't have any wines at home that fit the northeastern Italy criteria.

Yeah, Rose has been trendy among geeks for the past few years. I'm not much of a rose drinker myself, perhaps buying one bottle every few years to see if I like them anymore than the last time I tried the genre.

Hi Mark, nice to read your post. I'm picking up a case of rosé on the way home this PM. I bought a bottle yesterday ($9?) and liked it very much as a good, everyday out-on-the-deck sipper. I'll provide the name in a further post within a day or two.

Certainly broadening the Italian theme to "Italian Whites" would seem fine as it is a pretty unfamiliar category for most.

I am loath to do the white wine category in June, especially since White Burg didn't get much traction.

Mark, according to market news the popularity goes far beyond the geeks. The general public is finally beginning to find there is fine wine beyond White Zin.

Perhaps, but orange is difficult to acquire & that makes for a tough wine focus.
