AFWE

Nice piece Robin on the Parker-out-of-the-closet-on-flavour issue.
I tasted, about a year ago, one of the Australian shiraz that I am told he likes. It is called Mollydooker, but I cannot remember which one of the range. It has a fun, quite garish label. But the real point is the wine. I found it totally undrinkable on account of its richness, alcohol and totally "over-the-top" impression. More like jam than wine in fact. Impossible (for me at any rate) to drink a glass of such stuff!

That's okay. With Mollydooker I don't really think it matters. :D

I need to start posting those here again. We got new Email software that uses a different coding system, making it difficult to cross-post. I ought to start at least putting up links and lead paragraphs, though. Thanks for the nudge, David B, even if you didn't mean to do it. And David C, thanks for the kind words.

I know it's uncool in geek circles, but I like the Mollydooker wines when taken for what they are. I've had The Boxer Shiraz, and the Carnival of Love Shiraz, both of which are great big, way overblown wines. While the wines may not be a perfect expression of the source grape, I find it hard to believe that anyone would find them undrinkable.

And proudly so! They will have to pry the pocket protector from my cold, dead short-sleeve, white Arrow button down shirt.

It's important that this forum does not alienate any wine drinker. Otherwise it becomes the "elite" Parker was talking about.

You mind your post being merged with a thread with the identical sentiment (and title!)? I oppose heavy handed moderation, but there does need to be some "janitorial" cleanup.

And to answer the question - yes, I am a moderator. One of the moderator tools is the ability to merge identical topics. That's about all the moderating I do, other than the occasional clean up of spam posts that get through.

You are not listed as a moderator. It is polite to ask before making such alterations. Has this become a Fascist Robert Parker website? Before you were around, this did not occur.

You may have a point about the merit of asking before moving, I'll leave that to you and David. But I don't think we want to go too far with these comparisons to fascism. One of the things I strongly dislike about ebob is the way they close threads when they become too critical of the host. But that is not at all what is happening here. This was just an attempt to combine two threads on the same topic in the interest of having a better conversation?

Agostino,

I am sorry that this bothers you so much. I have asked that my moderator status be made more public (as I have been one for a long while).

But, for your information, threads were merged in the past, just perhaps not yours. Other moderators have done the exact same thing. It is such common practice on the web that I certainly did not believe it would be a problem. No one has ever complained & I honestly thought my comment would at least politely inform you of what I was doing.

As for your reference to fascism, I take distinct and significant offense to that as I have not censored anything you wrote, nor insisted that you change it to conform some mythical party line.

You made my post disappear. I thought I had done something wrong. I even wrote Robin asking if I had written something offensive. If you had contacted me I would've known. My post came first, so it would've made sense to merge the other one with mine.

I have participated in this website for about 9 years without paying a dime and I wanted to pay my respects to Robin in a clear way.

I'm not sure where you come up with that. David's post was more than 48 hours before yours. Title was "AFWE". How could you miss that?

I didn't see it, honestly. I had been looking at posts for the past two days and I never saw it until mine disappeared. I could be wrong, I have no problem with that.

To be clear, I was surprised you didn't see the thread AFTER your post and the merging, as it was always near the top of the page. No one faults anyone for starting a new thread and missing previous one, but that's why there are merges. Your post is in this thread in chronological order and has never not been on the board. Janitorial cleanup is a necessity (another forum had something like 7 different threads I saw started re the Gallo/French Pinot Noir case).

Believing in the existence of elegance and grace, as opposed to sheer power and size, does not make one anti-flavor, IMO. I'm reminded of a remark by Victor Buono comparing a German soprano's rendering of "Madama Butterfly", sung very well in German, to watching "Swan Lake" danced very well by the San Diego Chargers.

I agree with Parker that anemic wines are not a good thing, and that the consumer has the right to expect that a wine be properly flavorful. Where we part company is that Mr. Parker doesn't seem to realize that it is possible to have too much of a good thing.

The other way that we part company is that I don't go around calling Mr. Parker and those who agree with him an "anti-elegance wine elite".

Yes, but isn't it true that in a claret-induced rant you once referred to the WA crowd as " the anti-balance wine hoi polloi"?
