What are we opening for Thanksgiving?

by James Roscoe » Mon Nov 23, 2009 11:04 pm

Thanksgiving is Thursday in the U.S,. What are people opening? I plan on opening a Riesling and a Pinot. Wat are the rest of you doing on America's finest holiday?
Yes, and how many deaths will it take 'til he knows
That too many people have died?
The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind
The answer is blowin' in the wind.

Hi James,

Great minds think alike, and fools seldom differ. I will be opening a Darting 2007 riesling kabinett from Pfalz and probably a Louis Jadot 2006 Bourgogne. My favorite white and red wines. I have not tried the riesling yet, but I really like the Jadot pinot, as it has great balance and is really nice with food.

I'm going to be opening a grand cru Burgundy (haven't decided which one yet) to drink with the coq au vin I'll be having for Thanksgiving dinner.

I'm thinking Terres Dorées Beaujolais Cuvée l'Ancien Vieilles Vignes 2008, and Francois Villard Viognier Les Contours DePoncins 2006, but I'm told I'll need to hide the good wine from the Plebes.......

Going to a communal Thanksgiving dinner following a noon church service. I will be preparing the cranberry "wine" punch that I posted earlier and taking some bottles (we may not get to opening all of them.) They will include a German Riesling Spatlese, Elyse Ingenue (white blend), Chirouble Beaujolais Cru and Harvey Scott Barbera and possibly a dessert wine.

Will be having Thanksgiving with my wife's mother's side, who hardly drink at all - I'm not taking anything, and it is highly unlikely that there will be any other alcohol there.

Probably my last bottle of Havens Syrah and a rich Pinot (Elizabeth Spencer, Clos Du Val Carneros or Signorello Carneros. Have not decided yet) I'm tempted to bring the Ajello Grillo-Catarratto, but that may be too weird. :?

Ooh. After reading others' lists, maybe a Beaujolais would be nice! :D

I figure it's an American holiday, so the wines should be American.
I'm looking at:
NV Chandon Etoile Brut
2007 Radog Riesling Evie's Blend Sta. Lucia Highlands
2008 Navarro Gewurztraminer Juice (I can't swallow alcohol, so this is as close as I get)
2006 Navarro Vineyards Pinot Noir "Methode a l'Ancienne"
N.V. Van Duzer Pinot Noir Windfall Willamette Valley (late harvest)

Not sure yet. Bu in spite of my love for French wines, for this holiday I always serve domestic and I know the friends we're dining with love chardonnay and zinfandel, so I'm leaning that way.

If you're a fan of Havens, now's the time to buy (sadly). Lots of amazing deals, I think K&L around you. I've gotten '06 Black and Blue and Bourriquot for $20 and $18 respectively from Grapes.

We'll be at dinner for 15. I'm only geek, bro-in-law likes wine, as does Betsy. Some others will drink wine, no one else cares in the slightest. I'll bring a red or two (maybe a mag of Havens Merlot or Bourriquot?), and a white (maybe break the US theme with a Gewurz).

Veuve Clicquot yellow label with the traditional fabulous pizza rustica my brother always makes and brings to start off the Thanksgiving feast!

For the table Selbach Riesling, which I figure will be a nice bottle since it's a Terry Theise selection. And for the red, a 2002 Windsor Vineyards Petit Syrah and either a 1998 Trabucchi Terre del Cereolo Valpolicella Superiore or a 1999 Falesco Merlot. I think something softened by a bit of age will go best.
Happy Thankgiving to all you winos!

So far I know we'll be having a Kosta Browne Syrah (my dad's contribution), a Carlisle Syrah (Salil's contribution), a Champagne or American Sparkler of some sort, and then some red wine I want to drink.

Looks like I'm within the norm. A Trimbach Gewurzt and a Louis Jadot Cote de Beaune-Villages. And since it's only wifey and me we're gonna just plop 2 straws into each bottle and have at it. We might even skip the food.

Thank you also, Jenise!

I'm proud to say the straw idea was my own, thanguverymuch. Wifey, not exactly renowned for self control when around wine, initially proposed inverting each bottle into one of those novelty beer dispenser hats at table so as to save that much more time. Philistine! I had to remind her of the fiasco which ensued when she tried that with a bottle of Chartreuse at her nephew's baptism.

I did concede to her insistance on using Powerpuff Girls straws rather than clear, though. She loves her Buttercup....

Hi,

Although we aren't celebrating, can I take advantage of this thread to wish you all a very happy Thanksgiving.

We have turkey for Christmas with my brother, and with a bit of luck, it will be one of his nicer clarets. As for the Xmas pud (thank the lord I'm spared pumpkin pie) it will be a '63 Taylor's port almost certainly - if I've got anything to do with it.

so... VERY happy Thanksgiving to one and all from a relative newcomer.
