Annoying problem with this forum...back button

by James Dietz » Sun Jan 27, 2008 2:24 pm

When I enter a thread and read and then want to go back to the main forum, I get a message that I need to refresh the page, and then have to affirm I really want to do that. This has only been happening recently in this new format. Is it just me? And how the bejeezers do I avoid having to go to the bottom of each thread and going back that way. I want my back button functionality back.

Jim, I'm a little puzzled by this, as the back button works for me. What browser (and computer operating system) are you using?

Meanwhile, note that you can also go back from the TOP of each page by clicking on your choice of
Board Index < WLDG < The Wine Forum
just under the header, to take you all the way to the top of the forums or just to the thread list for this forum. So you do have a click-back option both at the top and bottom of every page.

I don't understand about your back button's behavior, though, as nobody else has reported this problem.

Robin,

That's what my back button is doing as well in IE 6 and 7, so someone else has reported it.

I only recently saw this behavior a couple of times, so I tried to reproduce it. Turns out that it was reproducible for me only when I hopped over to the Forum Kitchen. If I stayed within the Wine Forum exclusively, I did not see this problem. I am using Windows-XP SP2 with IE7.

Me,too, with IE 7.06 and Vista 32. It happens when returning to the forum from a thread but not always and I haven't been able to detect a pattern. I haven't been particularly bothered by it since the "Return to Wine Forum" link works. I suppose it would be handier if the back button always worked, though.

What I miss is the ability to go to the next topic or the previous topic without going back to the forum. Quite frankly, I find the inability to do that an almost fatal flaw. I come over much less often than I did, and I read fewer threads or topics than I did. This new software seems much more cumbersome than the previous software.

Hmmm, my back button seems to work just as it should - both with IE7 and Firefox - windows xp pro
But I do it a bit differently than you - I come to the forum list, and right click on all the threads I want to open in a new tab.
Then, I just go from one tab to the next, read each thread, and close tabs as I go. When I'm done reading all the threads, I'm back to the forum list.

FWIW, I do not experience this back button problem. XP PRO SP2, IE7, IE6.

The lack of a NEXT link to go to the next thread is a non issue for me, since I don't usually want to read each and every thread/reply.

No problems for me on XP Home SP2, IE7 or FF2. I use mouse gestures in FF so don't even need to use the back button any more.

If it helps - my forum behaviour is 99% of the time I click on the 'view new posts' icon. Only ~ 1% of the time do I go direct to a particular forum.

oh and IE of some version - will be escaping it's clutches when I get round to it.

When you say 'enter a thread and read ......', are you talking about typing in (i.e.entering) a brand new posting or reply?
If so, then it is logical that this would happen.

You make a post
You get a page with links to 'view your submitted message' or to 'return to the forum last visited'.
If you clicked on 'view your submitted message', view your message, then hit the back button in the browser- it is going to take you back to the previous page, which is not the main forum - it is the page that you left to view your newly submitted message ... but that page has now expired. It seems that this is working as it should.

You can refresh your browser to bring that page back.

No Sue - He has the same issue I have: go into a thread, read it and try to go back by using the browser's back button. It doesn't work. In fact for me it has frequently caused some sort of fatal error with IE that causes the program to close. Sounds like version 3 of this software has an incompatibility issue with IE to me.

Different problem Bob.

The issue we are discussing is an inability to use the reverse arrow button on the browser's navigation tool bar.

Usually I'm the one with the odd problem, but in this case no problems with back button (WinXP with SP2, IE7).

It would be nice if it were as simple as that, David, but there have been numerous reports of folks who use IE without this problem. I don't think it's a cookie thing (thank Bacchus), but it the only logical explanation based on the rich stew of varying combinations we've seen here is that it's something that varies with the individual setup.

When I have time (tomorrow afternoon?) I'll look into the PhpBBS forums and see what I can see. (Actually, those forums aren't proprietary - anyone can use them - so if anyone would like to click the hotlink embedded in "Powered by phpBB" at the bottom of every forum page, you can click around there and find support, knowledge base, forums, etc. I'm not trying to shunt this off on anyone else, just saying, if anyone's eager or curious, you don't have to be a forum admin to take advantage of these open source features.

I also have problems with the "back button" and stuff like HTTP get/post not remembering browser state.

Another thing: Could we go back to the old default, where links are 'target="_blank"' and spin off new windows?

I am now totally confused. What I miss is the previous software's ability to let me click between threads without constantly going back to the forum for the list. In the upper right corner there used to be a place that let me click to the next thread in the chain. That was user friendly. I don't find this software user friendly at all.
