OK so lets get to it forumites! This winery started production in the early 1800`s, maybe not the best known appellation. Known for some excellent port-style wines.
Wine has seen 30% new oak, 70% second fill for 18 months. I opened for one hour and decanted but did not seem to make a big difference. 14.5% alc. Tom Stevenson in his recent Wine Report states that the vintage is a classic, especially for the red wines.

The colour is a medium red-ruby, not much depth in the centre which is strange. Not showing any age developement on the rim.
I had gushes of chocolate on opening but after an hour very savoury with red berries, oak, spice. To my mind does not show true varietal character?
On the palate, my initial mouthfeel entry is oak, dry not ripe, good tannins but needs more fruit. Some prunes, cherry and yes chocolate! Not a wine for the short term I`d say and this has seen a few years already. 2hrs, starts to open up a little with blackcurrant and black berries, some dried herbs too. The shortish finish still has some burnt oak quality and I think wine is closed down. To be honest, I was expecting more from this wine but I am not too familiar with the area of production.

************************************************************

So old world, new world?
Grape varietal, Country of origin, vintage, appellation, guess winery etc.
I will be around most of Tuesday so hints will be forthcoming!!

Good luck!

From clues sounds like Douro. I have no clue re vintages, and only grape I know is Tinta Roriz/tempranillo, and description doesn't really sound like those. Port houses that also do dry- Ferreira or Niepoort?

I was thinking a red from a Banyuls or Maury producer, too, but then Bob said not French. Stylistically Chapoutier is a very good guess, though.

2001 Allegrini La Grola (swinging for the fences, as usual, though my one reservation concerns the 19th Century comment)

Dale, I considered Banyuls/Maury but rejected them for two reasons:
1. This wine sounds quite dry, so not a vin doux naturelle
2. I don't think that there were many wineries established in the Roussillon before the 20th Century.

Mark,
I too thought the wine dry (why I guessed red Douro table wine), but he said winery was "Known for some excellent port-style wines." As far as that, except for not-French comment, Jay's Chapoutier might fit- they make both Banyuls and Maury, as well as many dry wines. Know nothing of history of region.
I also thought of Australia, but then the Old World comment.

It would be a stretch to call Amarone "port-style." So my guess was that Bob was pulling a psychological feint with the "style", and meant Port.

Amarone crossed my mind too. It can be port-like. Maybe even a Rispasso.

Cheers,

No-one is even close yet! Think southern hemisphere, yup old world. This winery is known for also producing an excellent port. The grape varietal is cab sauv, so we can get back on track!

Maybe some of you will rap my knuckles, but to me Old World/Southern Hemisphere is an oxymoron.

I agree. I guess we're talking South Africa or Australia, but have never heard either referred to as Old World before.

S Africa correct! Now where do we go? Think Cape.

Old World Just did a google...."refers to Europe but can include Asia, Africa". Think we need a new thread for this quote ie Old World?!!

No, Old World won't work for SA: the typical construction is: Old World, New World, Third World and guess where almost all of the African continent falls? I'll ponder this new information, though.

In wine terms, SA is New World: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_World_wine

Wikipedia isn't what I'd call definitive scholarly source, but that fits with my useage.

From a geopolitical view, I'd also view SA as New World rather than 3rd, has been more economically developed than rest of subSaharan Africa for last couple centuries.

That aside, others can guess the wine, as my knowledge of SA wine is limited to very occasional de Toren or Mulderbosch.

So far we have Cab Sauv, the Cape, also known for port. Any more guesses?

Agreed--none of the tasting groups I've ever been in considered SA old world.

But that said, a winery I know of whose wines might fit this description would be Boplaas....
