The lighter wine was the Ramon Cordova Rioja Rosado 2018, predominantly granache with a fifth viura. By saying it recalls red grapefruit, I mean that it has zingy acidity, pithy bitters, and juicy fruit. The range of flavors goes beyond citrus to watermelon, guava and berries. Its lightness by way of color, weight and cost, adds to its appeal.
The bigger wine was the Camuna Cellars Carignan 2017. This is a high-pitched aria, with searing eucalyptus riding waves of varying wavelengths; high wavelengths of cherry and long wavelengths of cola. It's combination of lean body, intense flavors and acidity lend it the feel of wine originating from a high altitude, sloped vineyard, though the grapes for this wine were sourced in Contra Costa County.
