I opted for a sparkling wine in lieu of a white; the Hagafen Brut Cuvee 2015. It is 70% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay. It opens with a refreshing tartness, combining McIntosh apple with yeast that softens as it lingers on the palate and in the flute, leading into fresh strawberries and assorted other red fruit. For the red, I had the Vitkin Grenache Noir 2016; light in body but heavy on flavor with versatility and food-friendliness. It exudes deep cherry flavors with--what I'd characterize as--smoked paprika. It's a wine that doesn't rely on acidity nor oak, but on accessibility, interplay between body and deep flavors, and silky tannins to seduce us.
